National Safe Work Month 2025: Review controls

Home » Insights » National Safe Work Month 2025: Review controls

Implementing controls is an essential step in managing workplace risks, but the job doesn’t end there.

Controls are only effective at eliminating or minimising risks if they’re working as intended. That’s why reviewing control measures is a vital part of any risk management process. Don’t wait until something goes wrong to check if your controls are working.

Why reviewing controls matters

Workplaces are constantly evolving. New staff join, processes change, equipment gets updated, and unexpected hazards can appear. A control measure that worked last year may not be as effective today. Regular reviews help ensure your workplace is not only compliant with WHS laws but also genuinely safe for your team.

When should you review controls?

A review should be carried out:

  • If a control measure fails.
  • Before changes are made that could create new or different risks (e.g. new machinery, new tasks, or changes to work environments).
  • When new hazards are identified, including psychosocial risks such as stress or bullying.
  • If consultation with workers indicates that a review is necessary.
  • At the request of a health and safety representative.
  • When new information or legislation suggests your controls may not be the most effective.

Key questions to ask in your review

To check whether your controls are working as planned, consider:

  • Are the control measures effective in both design and operation?
  • Have they introduced any new risks or problems?
  • Have all hazards been identified and addressed?
  • Have new methods, tools, or processes made the job safer?
  • Are workers following safety procedures consistently?
  • Has training been effective in helping staff understand and apply safe work practices?
  • Are workers actively engaged in hazard reporting and safety discussions?
  • Is the frequency or severity of incidents decreasing over time?

Building a safety culture

A review isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s an opportunity to engage your team, listen to their feedback, and create a culture where safety is everyone’s responsibility. When workers feel comfortable raising concerns and sharing ideas, controls are more likely to remain effective long-term.
